ever-impressing uk talent james dexter makes a return to bondage-music this december as he drops his latest three track ep lets go back. 2018 has been a substantial year for london based dj and producer james dexter, with appearances at the likes of fabric (london), claire (amsterdam) and sash (sydney) and releases on little helpers, gruuv, deeperfect and his own inermu imprint in the past 12 months alone. with the new year in sight, here we find three new fresh productions in the form of his lets go back ep, marking a return to bondage music in the process following his recent remix of frinks sofisticate on the imprint. title cut lets go back opens proceedings as dexter reveals an up-front, bumping cut armed with crunchy drum licks, infectious vocal samples and rich, airy chords, before simple things utlises further rich and soulful vocals alongside crisp skipping hats and resonant kicks to guide the production through seven minutes of groove driven house music. last up, dexters roll through pairs refined, stripped back organic percussion arrangements with wandering synth lines and vocal coos to wrap up the ep in fine fashion.

brendon moeller offers up his set in motion ep on echocord sub-label echo echo this september, comprising three originals from the dub techno veteran. south africa, new york based producer and dj brendon moeller aka beat pharmacy/echologist has long been respected as one of the pioneering figures in ethereal, dubbed-out techno with regular appearances at global hot spots like fabric, berghain and cielo as well as releases on labels like third ear, kimochi, neovinyl and echocord. here though we see moeller joining the roster of the latter’s sublabel echo echo, marking its fourth release. title-track set in motion leads with brendons signature murky synth textures at its core whilst lumpy low-end tones, shuffled hats and spiraling dub echoes fluidly undulate amongst one another throughout. eastern beach follows, and as the name would suggest, nods towards brighter sounds with airy pads, soft bell chime synths and pulsating subs driving the composition alongside swinging, heavily reverberated percussion. economy then closes the package, stripping things back to gritty dub stabs, dusty 4/4 drums and billowing noise sweeps.
berlin based electronic mainstay marquis hawkes has announced details of his second lp ‘the marquis of hawkes’, due out 24th august 2018 on fabric’s in-house label houndstooth (home to call super, aïsha devi, special request and more). ahead of this, hawkes will also release a new single featuring acclaimed uk soul singer jamie lidell. the single, entitled ‘we should be free’, features, alongside the low slung but melancholic original version, three reinterpretations of the song, remixed by hawkes himself. both this, and the essential previous single, “don’t u”, which featured the vocal talents of ursula rucker, will appear on the forthcoming album.

thoma bulwer returns with jandaze , his latest ep via parasol culture featuring long-time partner in crime anna wall. it follows parasol 001 their first joint vinyl release, that sold out on the shelves gaining support from the likes of mood ii swing and cab drivers plus on the airwaves via nts. their jandaze ep has already been doing the rounds on the dj circuit in hackney wick and beyond. ‘patience’ was the result of a late night jam session with sync boxes, groove benders and the classic tr-909. after much fine-tuning, it’s been tried and tested by cinthie on her recent australia tour and is set to be a staple club cut for this summer. although ‘insouciant’ means a casual lack of concert, a lot of work went into making this one. it’s the most laid-back of the bunch, with smallville-esque juno 106 melodies perfect for the afterparty or warm up session. this goes out to the post-nyd loft party crew in the wick where it was played for the first time. try pronouncing this one at 7am in the morning… ‘fridge speed’ is a minimal house cut influenced by thoma’s garage roots. think rudely placed analogue synth stab melodies, ‘tuff’ skippy drums and big subs ideal for early hours and “it’s a london thing” house sets. ‘egress’ was made with long jam takes from thoma’s modular system. deep, dubby beats, evolving synths and textures make up this track thats been road-tested on the world famous fabric room 1 sound system by voigtmann in his extended set before ricardo villalobos. current support comes from maya jane coles, archie hamilton franck, roger, cinthie, voigtmann, john dimas.
